Biography

Sophia Bernitz

Sophia Bernitz is a second-year Violin Fellow at the New World Symphony. As an orchestral musician, she has served as Concertmaster and Principal Second Violin of New World, The Orchestra Now (TON), Oberlin Orchestra on their Chicago tour, as a section violinist with Boston Philharmonic and as a substitute with Charleston Symphony. During the summer of 2018 she was a Violin Fellow with the National Repertory Orchestra (NRO) in Breckenridge and had the opportunity to solo with the NRO on Vivaldi’s Winter from the Four Seasons. She was Concertmaster for Ein Heldenleben with TON. She has appeared in ensemble and solo performances all over the world.. She is also a proud alumna of the Kinhaven Music School in Weston, Vermont where she spent seven summers. As a chamber musician, Ms. Bernitz has had the opportunity to work and perform with some of the world’s leading quartets, including Borromeo, Pacifica, Dover, Muir, Cavani, Jupiter and Miro quartets. In 2016 she performed alongside Andres Diaz at Madeline Island as part of the fellowship string quartet program. She is a member of Jamaica Plain Chamber Music in Boston. Her most influential coaches have been Merry Peckham, Darrett Adkins and Peter Slowik. Her biggest violin inspiration is Janine Jansen. Originally from Lexington, MA, she received her BM from Oberlin Conservatory in Violin and Viola performance, and a MM from New England Conservatory in violin. Her teachers include David Bowlin, Kris Tong, Peter Zazofsky and Peter Slowik. She plays on a 2014 Joseph Curtin violin.
