Biography
Praised as “luscious,” “amber-toned,” and “dazzling” by Opera News, American mezzo-soprano Samantha Hankey is quickly establishing a name for herself across the United States and abroad. Samantha recently joined the ensemble roster of the Bayerische Staatsoper, where she made her role and house debut as Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel. She continues her residency in Munich for the 2020-2021 season, where she will make her role debut as Octavian in a new production of Der Rosenkavalier. Prior season highlights include engagements with Den Norske Opera, Opernhaus Zürich, Grand Théâtre de Genève, The Dallas Opera, as well as multiple named role debuts in her first season at The Metropolitan Opera in 2018. Equally at home in classic repertoire and new music, Samantha regularly collaborates with composers through workshops and world premieres including productions with Opera Philadelphia and the Met. Throughout her growing career, Samantha has been the recipient of numerous national and international awards and honors including The Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, The Glyndebourne Opera Cup, The Richard Tucker Music Foundation, and second prize and the Birgit Nilsson Prize for her interpretation of Richard Strauss at Operalia.
