Founded in 1986 by Stephen Crout, Washington Concert Opera has shaped the way concert opera is presented in the DC area. Washington Concert Opera produces high quality, seldom performed masterpieces of the operatic repertoire in concert form at the company’s artistic home, Lisner Auditorium of George Washington University. WCO has been revered as, “integral to the musical fabric of the city” (The Washington Post) and praised by Opera News for, “performances of the highest order.”

National Sawdust’s mission is rooted in music discovery that is open, inclusive, and based in active mentorship of emerging artists, while building new audiences and communities of music devotees. Founded as the Vocal Arts Society in 1990 by Dr. Gerald Perman, Vocal Arts DC is regarded as one of the world’s premier presenters of classical voice recitals. It continues to receive glowing reviews and has maintained a loyal and generous subscriber base. Its mission is to present accomplished singers, often in the early stages of their careers, in a full range of repertoire. Since its first season, Vocal Arts DC has tripled its subscriber base, more than doubled its number of recital presentations, and has become a vital force in the cultural life of the Washington, D. C., metropolitan area.

Tehvon Fowler-Chapman

Tehvon Fowler-Chapman joined Washington Concert Opera as Executive Director in August 2020. Prior positions include Manager of External Affairs at Vocal Arts DC, Director of Artistic Administration at National Sawdust (Brooklyn, NY), and Company Manager for Wolf Trap Opera. A strong advocate for artists, he recently served as part of the Artist Relief Tree, a grassroots organization dedicated to supporting artists financially through the COVID-19 pandemic’s economic effects on the arts. Additionally, he is a member of the inaugural cohort of Sphinx L.E.A.D. (Leaders in Excellence, Arts, and Diversity), a program started by the Sphinx Organization to empower leaders of color in the performing arts. He holds an M.A. in Arts Administration from Indiana University and a B.M. in Instrumental Music Education from Arizona State University.
