Biography

Brent Michael Smith

Brent Michael Smith, bass, is from Owosso, Michigan. Brent joined the International Opera Studio of Opernhaus Zürich for the 2020-2021 season. He joins the Ensemble the following season 2021-2022. As a member of the IOS Brent sings Pietro in Simon Boccanegra, Haushofmeister in Capriccio and Il Commissario imperiale in Madama Butterfly. Brent graduated in May 2020 from the Academy of Vocal Arts. While there, he sang Fafner in Das Rheingold, Truffaldino in Ariadne auf Naxos, Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte, Frère Laurent in Roméo et Juliette, Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro and Balthazer in La Favorite. In 2019, Brent debuted with Opera Philadelphia as Peter Quince in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. He returned to that company as Tchélio in The Love for Three Oranges for their O19 Festival. In 2018, he debuted with the Santa Fe Opera as the Lakey in Ariadne auf Naxos while an Apprentice Artist. He returned there in 2019 to cover Colline in La bohème and Drokan in the world premiere of The Thirteenth Child by Poul Ruders. Brent is a former young artist of The Santa Fe Opera, The Glimmerglass Festival, Michigan Opera Theatre, Central City Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Kentucky Opera and Sarasota Opera. Brent is a National Semifinalist of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions (2020). He is a prize winner of the Grand Rapids Opera Competition (2012), Giargiari Bel Canto Competition (2018), Opera Birmingham Competition (2018) and Opera Index Competition (2018). He has received grants from Loren L. Zachary Society (2019) and the Young Patronesses of the Opera (2019).
