Biography

Victoria Lawal

Nigerian-American Soprano Victoria Lawal’s reimagined 2020-2021 Season yields fruitful collaborations in both Art and Advocacy. Victoria joins the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity for their Opera in the 21st Century Residency, co-directed by Soprano Karen Slack and Ian Cusson. Lawal then joins renowned The Glimmerglass Festival as a Young Artist, debuting the role of Erste Dame in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte and originating the role of Soprano #2 in the World Premiere filmed production of The Knock by Aleksandra Vrebalov and Deborah Breevort. Recent engagements included Beethoven's Mass in C, Mozart's Requiem, and originating two principal roles. With Beth Morrison Projects, Victoria was engaged to create the role of Sabine in Adoration, by Mary Kouyoumdijan and Royce Vavrek. Marking an International debut, Victoria was to join Helsinki's Sibelius Academy, creating the role of Svitlana Fodorov in Ulljas Pulkkis' All the truths we cannot see, depicting the 1986 Chernobyl Crisis. Highlights from the 2019/2020 session include a debut with the Angeles Chorale performing Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem, and joining Opera Buffs for multiple engagements, covering both Clorinda (La Cenerentola) and Violetta while performing Annina in La Traviata. Further engagements include a role debut as Helena in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream, and originating the role of Opal in the World Premiere of The Body Female, commissioned by LA Opera. Additionally, Lawal serves as Secretary of the Board of the Perfect Day Music Foundation.
