Biography

Jardena Gertler-Jaffe

Jardena has appeared as a soloist with Cincinnati Fusion Ensemble, Concerts in the Village (NY), Victoria Baroque, and the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra. Jardena's recent opera credits include singing the roles of The Composer in Bard’s operatic pastiche Rest in Pieces, Dorabella in Mozart's Così fan tutte, Hansel in Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel, and Molly/Nephthys/Tahemet in Dean Burry’s opera Isis and the Seven Scorpions. In October 2020, Jardena was named a fellow in the RBC Future Launch Association for Opera in Canada Emerging Artist Fellowship. She is a student in the selective Graduate Vocal Arts Program at Bard College Conservatory where she studies with Lorraine Nubar, Stephanie Blythe, Kayo Iwama, and Erika Switzer. Jardena holds a B.Mus. from the University of Toronto, and is an alumna of the Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme, the Pacific Opera Victoria Artist Development Program, SongFest, and Opera NUOVA. In 2018, Jardena was proud to place first in mélodie and lieder competitions in Victoria, British Columbia. While performing is her main focus, Jardena also earned her M.A. in Ethnomusicology from the University of Toronto. Jardena seeks to incorporate her research interests, concerning the construction of musical and cultural identities in the face of oppression, into her artistic practice. An interpreter of Yiddish art song and Jewish liturgical works, Jardena has worked as a cantorial soloist in synagogues in the United States and Canada, and performed at Jewish Music conferences and festivals in Quebec and Ontario.
